Fighting bluebirds?

When I saw these two guys going at it I thought I was losing my mind. It looked as if there was going to be a duel to the death! I never knew eastern bluebirds to be so territorial, but when another male showed up to an established pair's nest in the backyard, let's just say it was ON!

Kind of funny really. Bluebirds are so demur and peaceful looking, guess that idea is blown out of the water now.

On a lighter note, the eggs have since hatched and parental duties have ensued for the pair. Can't wait for the babies to fledge!

Over a period of about a week, other bluebirds attacked the parent bluebirds preventing them from feeding their 5 recently hatched birds in our birdhouse. The 5 young birds died from starvation - very depressing! Does anyone know why this happened? That same birdhouse has had two sets each for two summers of hatched bluebirds previously.
