A Hawky New Year

Well Happy 2009 folks! The old year has passed, the new has arrived, and I've got my first shots ever of a Red-shouldered hawk.

This bird flew by while I was walking my dogs earlier today and hung around long enough for me to get the girls back to the house and grab my kit. A really exciting start to the photographic year.
Apparently, he's been making himself quite at home around the farm the last few weeks, even taken to sitting in the mimosa tree to watch the feeder birds. Guess even hawks need a little snack from time to time. Usually see the sharp shinned hawks taking the little birds though.

By the way, if I'm wrong on the id of this fellow let me know. I heard another red shoulder 'talking' in another tree across the pasture, and that combined with some other shots I took are what lead me to this id. But if it's a red-tail, please correct me! :)

I only saw a red-shouldered hawk once but this looks like one to me. Isn't it exciting to see a new bird!!
Very nice capture of him flying towards you. You're off to a good start for the New Year.

My hubby is a falconer, and says that you are correct! We don't have a bird right now, but he had a red tail, and it's amazing to have them fly to your fist! He let his bird Zena go, and she ended up nearly 2 miles down our road, hanging around a friend's house! We went down to see her, and my son got to pick her up on his gloved hand one more time. I was sad to see her go-they are such a beautiful creature! I love your photography-you take awesome pictures!

Thanks Christy for your kind comments on my photos. I thought I would stop by your blog and was pleasantly surprised to find you have some beautiful photos yourself. The red tail and other shots are fantastic. I will stop by again.

Wow, what great pictures you take!
I have always had an interest in birds myself. Don't get to see as many now as I used to when I lived back east. Keep up the good work!
