Have you ever wondered...

Have you ever wondered what a woodpecker does after he or she's finished making all of those holes in trees? I mean what is it looking for and how in the world does one get it out?
The answer lies in it's tongue. A really incredible tongue. After the woodpecker pecks her hole she sticks her tongue, which is longer than her bill, into the whole to probe around for goodies, like grubs! :) Once something yummy is located a woodpeckers tongue is able to stab it and pull it back out of the hole for a 'wholesome' meal, no pun intended. :)

Here's a shot of a female downy's tongue as she was sticking it out after eating some suet.
Here's a really AWESOME link to follow if you'd like to know more about woodpeckers. You'll find great information and some cool photos of a woodpeckers tongue in action!
