The incredibly fast and sometimes annoying skippers...

Published by Christy under on 10:21 AM

In my search for butterflies I don't seem to be fairing so well, but then again it is early in the season. However, if skippers tickle your fancy I've got plenty of them! Skippers are generally grouped with butterflies but they aren't 'true' Papilionoideas (butterflies) such as monarchs or swallowtails. They belong to another family called Hesperoidea. Skippers body to wing ratio is much larger than true butterflies and they feature shorted more curved antennae and other differences. Most people see these small butterflies and think they're moths, but moths belong to another butterfly 'superfamily' entirely. A good way to tell the difference between a moth and a butterfly or skipper is to check out the antennae. Moths generally have 'feathered' ends and butterflies will have something of a knobby looking end on their antennae.

At any rate, I haven't id'd this fellow yet but I am leaning towards a Hobomok or Zebulon skipper. These guys were quite territorial so it's prob
ably a Zebulon. I'm welcome to anyone who can tell me yea or nae on this one, so please correct me if I'm wrong! :)
